Space debris
- Space debris (also known as space junk, space pollution, space waste, space trash, or space garbage) is defunct artificial objects in space—principally in Earth orbit—which no longer serve a useful function.
- The LEO environment is becoming congested with space debris because
of the frequency of object launches. [leftover of satellite waste]
- This has caused growing concern in recent
years, since collisions at orbital velocities can easily be dangerous,
and even deadly.
- Collisions can produce even more space debris in the process, creating a domino effect, something known
as Kessler syndrome.
Initiatives taken to tackle the problem
- Inter-Agency
Space Debris Coordination Committee
- NORAD: North American
Aerospace Defense Command, is an initiative of
the U.S.
and Canada
